Coulthard learned of Red Bull exit during toilet trip

David Coulthard found out his Formula 1 career was ending during a trip to the toilet, after Helmut Marko revealed the news against the explicit wishes of team principal Christian Horner. The revelation comes from Horner's upcoming memoir, Drive, released on October 22.

Horner, who was sacked by Red Bull in 2025 following a misconduct scandal, was in the early stages of his tenure when he decided to let the 13-time Grand Prix winner go. He told Marko that Coulthard should make the announcement himself.

Marko breaks confidence

An excerpt from the book reads: "There was a month to go until Silverstone, so I had little option but to mention the suggested plan to Helmut. Having told him the situation, I then stressed the importance of DC [Coulthard] making any announcement himself."

"'This has to come from DC,' I said. 'Please don't breathe a word.' The next morning before practice, DC went to the toilet and stood at a urinal next to Helmut."

"'I hear you're retiring at Silverstone then,' Helmut said, smiling. DC was stunned. 'How do you know that?' 'Because we're taking Vettel next year,' said Helmut, bluntly."

Coulthard's reaction and legacy

Horner recalled how Coulthard immediately stormed to the garage to verify the speculation. "'I think I've just been retired in a toilet,' he said, looking despondent. I was annoyed. I'd wanted DC to know he was respected by everyone at Red Bull and that his departure was being handled with sensitivity. Typically, Helmut had come in like a wrecking ball and crushed a delicate process."

Coulthard understood there was "little room for sentimentality" in F1, and Horner offered him an ambassador role. Sebastian Vettel finished second in his Red Bull debut year before winning four straight titles. Coulthard has since become a broadcasting success and a Sky Sports regular, while Horner's 20-year Red Bull reign has ended as he awaits a potential return to F1.
