Food blogger Gary Hanna, known for his YouTube channel GaryEats, has crowned Booths as the UK's best supermarket breakfast, surpassing popular chains like Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisons, and Marks & Spencer. After a series of disappointing breakfasts at other supermarkets, Hanna traveled to Kendal, Cumbria, to sample the offerings at the independent chain, which operates 26 stores across northern England.
A Breakfast Worth the Journey
Hanna ordered a lavish spread at Booths, including a sausage sandwich, full English breakfast, fruit teacake, crumpets, and a pot of tea. His main focus, however, was the full English breakfast, which cost £9.50. The meal featured sausages, generous bacon portions, black pudding, tomatoes, beans, hash browns, and two thick slices of toast.
Hanna was impressed by the quality of the ingredients, a stark contrast to his previous experiences. He noted, "Just cutting into the poached egg... that's not too bad." He praised the sausages as "stunning" and "very, very meaty," and the bacon as "perfectly salted." The toast, he remarked, was "nice and thick," adding, "If you give the people what you want, people will come in and pay a bit more."
Quality Ingredients Shine
Hanna emphasized the importance of using quality ingredients, calling on supermarkets to provide chefs with better supplies. He described the black pudding as having a "bit of an iron-y taste" that he enjoyed. Overall, he declared the breakfast "quality" and said it was "easily the best supermarket breakfast I've had bar none, miles ahead of the competition."
He gave the breakfast a score of 8.5 to 9 out of 10, praising the Booth family for their standards. "Loved the music, loved the staff, loved the standards, loved everything about that," he concluded.
