Black Box Flight 298, a horror film described by viewers as '90 minutes of pure tension', is now available for streaming. Despite the title dividing some fans, it is being touted as the perfect weekend watch in the run-up to Halloween.
Streaming Release Details
Black Box Flight 298 was launched on Paramount+ on October 16. Fans can watch it via the streamer's dedicated app or through an add-on subscription on Prime Video. The film only had a limited release in US cinemas, so this marks the first opportunity for most UK audiences to see it.
The film is inspired by the short film The Vessel, produced by Clark Baker. This feature-length version is directed by Steven Quale, known for Final Destination 5 and Into the Storm. The script was written by Stephen Susco, who previously penned horror entries such as The Grudge and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.
Plot and Critical Reception
According to its synopsis, what starts as a routine domestic flight quickly descends into a journey from hell amid inexplicable phenomena and raw terror. Surreal encounters blur the line between reality and nightmare. Passengers are forced to fight against all odds to survive, battling bizarre technological malfunctions, escalating supernatural events, and even alien influences.
Despite its humble budget, the film has been largely well-received by critics. It has secured a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fan Reactions
One critic declared: "Black Box delivers relentless action, subjective purpose and a new spin on visceral suspense." Another suggested: "Black Box is all about suspense, nail-biting tension and otherworldly horror, in a sci-fi spectacle that puts airborne passengers in mortal peril."
It has still faced some criticism, with one verdict stating: "Overall, Black Box is slick, atmospheric and occasionally unsettling, but its familiar premise, underdeveloped characters and uneven screenplay prevent it from rising above genre convention."
There is also a divide amongst fans who have already seen it. However, a significant number recommend it as a must-watch for horror enthusiasts. One person confessed: "I didn't expect too much from this supernatural sci-fi horror fantasy hybrid, but it absolutely delivered more than I ever anticipated. I find myself wanting a sequel to dive deeper into the world-building presented, which is always a good thing."
Another fan concurred: "Absolutely exceeded my expectations. It's a taut and fast ride with an incredible score. The sense of dread being held hostage on a plane is depicted well, and things get nice and dark in the second act."
One viewer added: "Black box is simply 90 minutes of pure tension, the CGI cloud effects around the plane are believable, and it kept me hooked, which none of the blockbusters in the last 3 years did for me." Another person posted: "Amazing psychological thriller. Leaves you on the edge of your seat. Watch for yourself. Highly recommend!"
