BBC Breakfast has discussed a proposal to rename Nashville International Airport after Dolly Parton, following the country music legend's death aged 80. The idea was raised on Saturday morning's programme, shortly after presenters Charlie Stayt and Luxmy Gospal went live with the latest headlines.
Viewers heard that officials in Tennessee are considering the tribute, which would see the airport named in honour of the singer. Charlie Stayt introduced the story by reflecting on the wave of tributes following Parton's death, before revealing that officials in her home state are considering a lasting tribute.
Proposal explained on air
Luxmy explained that the proposal would see the airport renamed in Dolly's honour, pointing to the significance of Nashville in her career. "They've suggested renaming Nashville International Airport in her name. The city is the capital of country music and the place where Dolly's career started," she said.
An online petition calling for the airport to be renamed was launched in January 2025. Following news of her death, support surged, with almost 160,000 people having signed by Friday evening.
Governor's response
Luxmy noted that Dolly "always maintained strong links throughout her life with the city and the state of Tennessee", adding: "I think it's a brilliant idea."
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has also responded to the campaign, revealing that he had spoken with Dolly's team about the proposed tribute. According to Lee, her representatives expressed appreciation for the support. He said her life was "forever woven into the fabric" of Tennessee and argued that an airport welcoming people into the state would be an appropriate place to celebrate her legacy.
Lee said Nashville International Airport could bear the name of Tennessee's "favorite daughter", while honouring the music, generosity, faith and kindness associated with Dolly.
Death and legacy
The idea came days after Dolly died aged 80 following a brief battle with cancer. Her representatives confirmed that she died at a Nashville medical centre surrounded by loved ones.
Her publicist Marcel Pariseau shared the news on Tuesday (August 25). A statement said: "After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, surrounded by loved ones."
Marcel continued: "Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope, and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand."
He added: "Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly's unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact."
