Anton Du Beke pays tribute to Dame Esther Rantzen after death

Anton Du Beke has paid a moving tribute following the death of Dame Esther Rantzen, reflecting on their time together on Strictly Come Dancing 22 years ago. It was announced on Wednesday evening (September 30) that the legendary broadcaster and campaigner had died, aged 86, surrounded by loved ones at her home in the New Forest.

Strictly partnership in 2004

Taking to Instagram, Anton shared a picture of the pair from 2004 when they were partnered together on one of the early series of Strictly. "I'm deeply saddened to hear about the passing of the wonderful Esther Rantzen," he said. "We first met when we partnered each other in the second series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2004 and remained firm friends ever since."

Dame Esther, known for hosting shows such as That's Life!, established charities to help the young and old, and in recent years became a prominent voice in the attempt to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales. Anton added: "I was also lucky enough to have the benefit of her wisdom as she became a valued mentor to me when I started out in television. Her breadth of knowledge and passion is unrivalled, a forerunner for women on television, the ultimate breaker of the glass ceiling. Esther had an extraordinary career - what an extraordinary woman and an extraordinary friend. She will be greatly missed and my sincere thoughts are with her family."

Family statement and fan reactions

Dame Esther was "the most wonderful mother", a "cherished grandmother", and someone who will be remembered for "her endless capacity for joy", her family said in a statement paying tribute. Her children, Miriam, Rebecca and Joshua Wilcox, said their mother's "legacy of compassion and understanding will live on in her charities".
