Tom Jones fan Mary, 81, gets wish with care home show

Tom Jones fan Mary Lowes was left delighted when one of her wishes came true with a very special performance at her Wallsend care home. The 81-year-old has long been a fan of the Welsh singing legend, so charity Wish Upon a Tyne decided to bring a taste of Tom Jones to her when it arranged for a tribute act to perform at Eothen Homes.

A joyful afternoon at Eothen Homes

Mary was joined by her niece and great-niece for the special afternoon, while fellow residents also got into the spirit by singing and dancing along to some of Sir Tom’s best-known hits. Describing the experience, Mary simply said: “It was magic.”

Her niece Louise Perry said: “She’s had the most amazing afternoon with her friends here at Eothen Homes, with Tom singing for her. We’ve all danced and we’ve sang and it’s really been a joyful afternoon.”

Tom Jones classics performed

The performance included renditions of hits including Sex Bomb, What’s New Pussycat? and Delilah. The surprise was organised by North East charity Wish Upon a Tyne, which grants wishes for older people across the region.

Charity founded to create memorable experiences

The charity was founded by Cheryl Davison, from Throckley, who previously worked in recruitment for residential nursing homes. Through her work, Cheryl saw first-hand how important activities, trips and special experiences could be for people living in care homes, as well as the financial pressures which can make providing them difficult. That inspired her to set up Wish Upon a Tyne and help create memorable experiences for older people across the North East.

For Mary, that meant an afternoon celebrating the music of one of her favourite singers alongside her family, friends and fellow residents.
