Arnold Schwarzenegger Returns to Belfast for Honorary Doctorate Ceremony

Actor and former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has been presented with an honorary degree during a special visit to Belfast. The 78-year-old Austrian-born star received the honorary doctorate from Ulster University in recognition of his significant contributions to public service, environmental advocacy, and the arts.

Emotional Return After Six Decades

Schwarzenegger described the experience as "unbelievable," noting that it marked exactly 60 years since his first visit to the city. In 1966, a 19-year-old Schwarzenegger came to Belfast as a bodybuilder to participate in a posing exhibition, invited by Irishman Ivan Dunbar.

"I tell you what makes this special," Schwarzenegger told those gathered on the red carpet. "Because it's kind of a 60-year anniversary and 60 years ago, in 1966 I was in Belfast for the first time, and there was this 19-year-old bodybuilder that was doing a posing exhibition here."

University Celebration and Student Enthusiasm

The ceremony drew enthusiastic crowds of students who cheered and held signs reading "Ulster he's back" and "Hasta La Vista Ulster." Some attendees brought copies of his iconic film Terminator 2 to celebrate the occasion.

Schwarzenegger expressed his appreciation for the honor, stating: "Ulster University is a very important university, and it's always a great honour to be honoured like that."

Reflecting on an Unexpected Journey

The former governor reflected on how his journey had evolved since that initial visit six decades ago. "This is not something that I dreamt of when I was 19-years-old, when I was here 60 years ago," he said. "That one day I will be coming here to get an honorary doctorate degree, it's unbelievable."

He also paid tribute to Ivan Dunbar, the Irishman who first invited him to Belfast, noting sadly that Dunbar had since passed away. "That's where my beginning was, in Ireland, in Belfast," Schwarzenegger added emotionally.

Post-Ceremony Engagement

Following the formal presentation ceremony, Schwarzenegger participated in a question-and-answer session with broadcaster Holly Hamilton, further engaging with the university community and sharing insights from his remarkable career spanning bodybuilding, acting, and politics.

The event marked a full-circle moment for Schwarzenegger, connecting his early athletic beginnings with his later achievements in public service and entertainment, all recognized through this prestigious academic honor from Ulster University.
