Liverpool Remembrance Day 1970s-80s rare photos

Rare archive photographs have captured how Liverpool marked Remembrance Day in the 1970s and 1980s, showing generations gathering at St George's Hall to honour those who lost their lives in war.

The tradition stretches back more than a century, with the steps of the historic building holding a significant place in the city's military history. Remembrance Sunday takes place on the Sunday closest to November 11, marking the date the First World War came to an end in 1918. At 11am, the nation falls silent for two minutes to remember those who sacrificed their lives.

Archive collection reveals past commemorations

The Mirrorpix archive collection has unearthed a selection of photographs capturing how Liverpool marked Remembrance Day throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The images offer a glimpse into the city's commemorations of years gone by, showing how different generations came together to remember the fallen.

Among the images is a photograph from Sunday, 9th November 1986, showing the Remembrance Day Parade and Service at St George's Plateau. Another image from Sunday, 12th November 1978, shows a youngster taking the salute at the Cenotaph as the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve march past.

Notable figures in the services

Several photographs feature civic and military figures. One image from Sunday, 8th November 1981, shows W. Hunter holding some of the many Orange Lodge banners carried to St George's Hall for the second service of the day. Another from Sunday, 9th November 1975, shows the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Owen Doyle, leading the service of remembrance held at St John's Gardens, with Rev Ronald Gray, Rector of Liverpool, and Col J Graeme Bryson, Vice-Chairman of the Liverpool Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, also in attendance.

Other images show Ellen Cavaliere laying a wreath in memory at the Cenotaph on Sunday, 9th November 1980, and Lord Mayor Councillor Doreen Jones taking the salute at the Cenotaph on Sunday, 11th November 1979. A photograph from Sunday, 11th November 1973, shows a guard of honour standing with head bowed as wreaths are laid at St George's Plateau.

This year's service

St George's Hall will once again provide the setting for this year's service, with the city also marking 110 years since the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest campaigns in military history. The Service of Remembrance will take place on Sunday, November 8, on the plateau outside the iconic hall.
