Prince Harry is planning a new documentary about Princess Diana and wants the last word on her legacy, according to royal commentators.
Speaking on a discussion about Earl Spencer’s memoir, Richard Jobson said the Duke of Sussex’s return to Britain was linked to the 30th anniversary of his mother’s death and a documentary he intends to make.
Why are they back?
Mr Jobson said: "The reality is, why are they back? We still don't know Kinsey. Apparently, the school in Montecito-they didn't even know the kids were going to be gone. So, you know, why are they back? I'd love to hear from the sources close to the Sussexes or even the Sussex spokesman. Why are you back?"
Mr Jobson said: "It's in my opinion, it’s to do with the 30th anniversary of his mother’s death. It’s to do with the documentary that he’s going to make."
Wants the last word again
He noted that Harry and his brother had cooperated on a documentary a decade earlier and declared it the last word on the subject, adding: "Sounds like Harry wants to have the last word again."
Mr Jobson also questioned the official explanation for the Sussexes’ move back to the UK. He said claims that it was for schooling had proved false, pointing out that the children’s school in Montecito had not been informed they were leaving.
Diana the central reason
Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield agreed that Diana was the central reason for the return. She said: "Is Harry’s real reason coming back here about Diana? I believe so."
Ms Schofield argued that Harry’s professional options in the United States had diminished, citing the end of his BetterUp role, reduced Netflix opportunities and Spotify’s rejection of a proposed podcast. She said a Diana documentary fitted the Sussexes’ established approach of linking themselves to the late princess’s reputation.
Both commentators noted that Earl Spencer’s book refers to "a nephew" in connection with documentary approaches, which they took as a reference to Harry.
