Dua Lipa Announced as Curator for London Literature Festival 2026
Global pop sensation Dua Lipa has been officially appointed as the curator for the 2026 London Literature Festival at the Southbank Centre. The chart-topping singer, renowned for international hits like "Levitating" and "One Kiss," will oversee the festival's programming, following in the footsteps of previous curators such as musician Self-Esteem. This prestigious role places her among a distinguished list of past headliners, including literary and cultural icons like Tom Hanks, Margaret Atwood, and Malala Yousafzai.
A Passion for Literacy and Reading
Dua Lipa, aged 30, is a vocal advocate for literacy and the transformative power of reading. She founded the Service95 Book Club, which has garnered a significant following. In her new capacity, she will curate a series of events throughout the festival's opening weekend and across its entire 11-day duration. The Grammy-winning artist expressed her enthusiasm, stating that reading has been a constant anchor in her life, from her school days in a new country to finding solace during tours.
"Curating the Southbank Centre's London Literature Festival is a dream come true," Lipa said. "I'm thrilled to indulge one of my greatest obsessions: books and the brilliant minds behind them. I can't wait to dive into the imaginations of some of my favourite authors in one of London's most iconic cultural spaces."
Part of a Momentous Celebration
The 2026 festival is set to be a highlight of the Southbank Centre's 75th anniversary year, described as a "momentous" celebration. The broader programme will feature additional high-profile contributions, including former One Direction singer Harry Styles curating the Meltdown festival and an exhibition by acclaimed British sculptor Anish Kapoor. This integrated approach aims to showcase diverse artistic talents and attract wide-ranging audiences.
Praise from Southbank Centre Leadership
Mark Ball, the artistic director of the Southbank Centre, praised Dua Lipa as a "global cultural force with millions of fans around the world." He emphasized that her passion for the written and spoken word has inspired a new generation of readers. "We are absolutely thrilled that Dua will take the reins of our flagship London Literature Festival," Ball added, noting that her creative talent, advocacy, and reach will help connect audiences with top writers.
Ted Hodgkinson, the centre's head of literature and spoken word, echoed these sentiments, calling Lipa "the ultimate champion of the role they can play in our lives." He highlighted the festival's goal to draw fresh audiences into the iconic spaces during the National Year of Reading, underscoring the importance of literary engagement in contemporary culture.
