Dan Dare: First Contact Graphic Novel Reboot Announced by B7 Comics
In a thrilling development for comic enthusiasts, B7 Comics has officially announced the publication of Dan Dare: First Contact, a graphic novel that reinvents the iconic British space hero for the 21st century. Written by acclaimed author Alex de Campi and illustrated by artist Marc Laming, this project marks a significant revival of the beloved character, originally created by Frank Hampson in 1950.
Timely Revival Amidst Space Interest Surge
The return of Colonel Dan Dare, chief pilot of the Interplanet Space Fleet, comes at a perfect moment, coinciding with heightened public fascination with space exploration. With NASA's Artemis II moon mission capturing global attention and the box office success of films like Project Hail Mary, the timing for this reboot couldn't be more apt. De Campi shared that the idea sparked after rediscovering old Dan Dare compendiums during a move, leading her to pitch the concept to the Dan Dare Corporation, which granted approval.
Modern Updates and Character Reinventions
Dan Dare: First Contact offers a fresh take on the classic series, designed to appeal to both longtime fans and new readers. The graphic novel features a 100-page narrative set in a future where climate change has devastated Earth, yet Britain emerges as a progressive leader in space exploration. Key character updates include:
- Digby, originally a bumbling servant, is reimagined as a young, working-class engineer and inventor from Wigan, adding dynamic energy to the story.
- Professor Jocelyn Peabody now has Indian heritage, providing a nuanced perspective on colonization themes inherent in space narratives.
- The arch-enemy, the Mekon, remains a central antagonist, ensuring continuity with the original lore.
De Campi emphasized that this reboot avoids the complexity of legacy franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek, aiming for an accessible space adventure. The project gained momentum through a successful Kickstarter campaign and is scheduled for release in November.
Heritage and Innovation in Comic Storytelling
Andrew Mark Sewell of B7 Comics highlighted the balance between honoring the original strip's DNA and making it relevant today. The graphic novel builds on the hopeful vision of Frank Hampson while addressing contemporary issues like privatization and public services. This approach ensures that Dan Dare: First Contact not only pays homage to its 1950s roots but also resonates with modern audiences, promising a captivating read for all ages.
