Sony has announced that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will now open on June 18, 2027, moving a week earlier to Father's Day weekend. The threequel will go head-to-head with Disney/Pixar's original animated film Gatto, which is set for the same date.
The shift marks another delay for the highly anticipated sequel, which was originally scheduled for March 29, 2024, and later pushed back due to the Hollywood strikes. The film has now been moved multiple times, with a previous date of June 25, 2027, now vacated.
Father's Day weekend has historically been a strong period for animated films, particularly Pixar releases. However, Pixar originals have struggled post-Covid, with Elio recently opening to just $20.8 million domestically and finishing with $73 million in the US and $154 million worldwide.
Beyond the Spider-Verse is directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson, with a script by David Callam, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller. The film continues the story of Miles Morales, who at the end of Across the Spider-Verse discovered a parallel version of himself transformed into the villainous Prowler.
The first two films in the series, Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse (2023), have collectively grossed over $1.08 billion globally, with the former winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The third instalment promises another innovative animation style, though the demanding production process has led to delays.
