Netflix Announces Michelle Obama Documentary 'Becoming'

Netflix has announced a new documentary focusing on former first lady Michelle Obama, titled Becoming, set for release on 6 May. The film follows Obama on her 34-city book tour promoting her memoir of the same name, offering an intimate and rare look at her life.

Directed by Nadia Hallgren, known for her documentary short After Maria about Hurricane Maria's impact on Puerto Rican families, the film captures Obama in tight, private spaces due to Secret Service constraints. Hallgren aimed to depict Obama's current experiences and reflections on her life beyond her White House years.

Obama's memoir Becoming was an instant bestseller upon release in 2018, selling over 10 million copies. Gallup polling named her the most admired woman in the US for two consecutive years. When asked about her suitability as vice-president, Joe Biden said he would pick her 'in a heartbeat'.
