Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick were among eight Manchester United youngsters who signed scholarship agreements with the club at the annual scholars night held at Old Trafford last Friday. The event marked a significant step in their football development as they entered the Professional Development Phase group.
Fathers Present at the Ceremony
Both proud fathers were in attendance: Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick watched as his son Jacey signed, while Wayne Rooney took a break from World Cup punditry duties to support Kai. The duo posed for a photograph together on the evening, symbolizing the next generation of footballing talent.
Player Backgrounds
Kai Rooney, 16, made six appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season and made his FA Youth Cup debut. He is expected to feature more prominently for Darren Fletcher's Under-18 side next season. Jacey Carrick, also 16, made just one appearance in the Under-18 Premier League last term but has committed to continuing his progression with the scholarship deal.
Scholarship Details
A scholarship contract allows players to continue their development as footballers and is the final stage before signing professional terms, which can take effect from a player's 17th birthday. Often, young players agree professional contracts before turning 17, with those agreements commencing from their birthday.
Other Signings
The other players to sign scholarship deals this summer are Gazik Ibragimov, Edson Dejonge-Seiros, Harlem McLaughlin, Pharell Silvester, Connor Laurie, and Jaume Camacho. At 15, JJ Gabriel is too young to sign and will progress next season, when United may face a battle to retain the gifted attacker.
