Bryton James, who played Richie Crawford on the 1990s sitcom 'Family Matters', has revealed he is working on an animated reboot of the series. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, James said he had an idea to turn the show into an animated series, modernising old episodes for a new generation.
James stated the project is 'pretty far along', with a production company secured to finance it and key cast members, including Jaleel White who played Steve Urkel, on board. The proposal is currently with Warner Bros., though James noted it is still 'floating around' and he continues to pursue it.
Warner Bros. Television did not comment, but a source familiar with Warner Bros. Animation told EW they are aware of James's interest but the project has not progressed beyond that stage. No official reboot of 'Family Matters' has occurred since the show ended in 1998.
'Family Matters' originally aired on ABC from 1989 to 1998, spanning nine seasons and 215 episodes. The show followed the Winslow family in Chicago and was a spin-off of 'Perfect Strangers'. James later joined the soap opera 'The Young and the Restless', appearing in over 1,600 episodes.
