Northumbria University Student Dies From Suspected Meningitis

A 22-year-old student from Malaysia has died from suspected meningococcal meningitis, Northumbria University has confirmed.

The woman, who was in her final year of study, arrived at the university in September and passed away in hospital on 1 October. The university only recently released details of her death.

No other suspected cases of the bacterial disease have been reported, but antibiotics are being offered as a precautionary measure to those identified as being in prolonged close contact with the student before she became ill.
