Pupils at Lord Derby Academy in Huyton are celebrating their GCSE results today (Thursday, August 20), with young people now preparing to take the next steps in their education, training, and employment journeys.
Hundreds of students and their family members entered the school at around 10am to receive and open their much-anticipated results, which were handed to them in envelopes. There were hugs and congratulations all around as students shared their success with one another. Pupils will now progress to a variety of post-16 pathways, including local colleges, sixth forms, apprenticeships and specialist training providers.
Top achievers share their joy
Poppy Boden, 16, from Huyton, achieved six 7s, two 8’s, and one 6 and said she was going to be celebrating with her family this evening. She told the ECHO: “I’m really happy! I didn’t think I’d get a 7 in Spanish because I really struggled with it. Same with physics, I struggled in the mocks.” She is going on to do maths, further maths, computer science, and physics at the University of Liverpool Maths School.
Poppy Barry, 16, from Huyton, achieved six 7s, one 8, and one 6 and will be going to Cronton College to study history, geography and English literature. She said: “I’m really happy, especially after the amount of revision I did. I’m so happy it’s all worked out. I’m just trying to take it in. I was shocked when I saw my science grade. I’ve never gotten a grade that high in science ever.”
Students celebrate personal progress
Luke Jones, 16, from Huyton, achieved three 4s, two 5s, three 6s, and two 7s. He is going on to do statistics, business, and Spanish at Carmel College and is going out for tea to celebrate. He told the ECHO: “I was made up, I didn’t even believe it, I’m so over the moon.”
Vimbo Chikuhuhu achieved two M2s, four 5s, two 4s, and one 3. She said: “I’m quite pleased compared to how I did in my mocks.” Vimbo is going on to study psychology, sociology, and social care at Carmel College.
Weronika Wojtas, 16, from Huyton achieved four 5s, two 4s, two 6s, and one 8 in Polish and is now heading to Myerscough College to study Level 3 Equine Management. She said: “I think I’ve done really well. Honestly, I was expecting 3s and 4s and thought I would have to resit in college and take the lower course, but then I saw the exact results I needed. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”
School leaders praise pupils and families
Jo Ellis, Head of School at Lord Derby Academy, said: “Today is about recognising the individual achievements of our pupils and celebrating the dedication they have shown throughout their education. We have also seen some excellent examples of personal progress across the year group. Every pupil’s journey is different, and we are delighted to see so many of our young people moving on to positive destinations that reflect their ambitions and interests. We would like to thank our pupils for their hard work, our dedicated staff for their commitment to supporting them, and our families for the encouragement they have provided throughout their children’s time at Lord Derby Academy. This partnership has been incredibly important in helping our young people to achieve their goals.”
