New research indicates that American teenagers are experiencing significant sleep loss due to extensive late-night smartphone usage, leading to a potential health crisis. The study, which tracked 657 adolescents, found an average of 50 minutes of smartphone use between 10 pm and 6 am on school nights, with nearly half of the participants using their devices between midnight and 4 am.
Health Consequences of Sleep Deprivation
This sleep deprivation is linked to negative consequences for teens' health, including mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, as well as chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes. Additionally, poor academic performance has been associated with insufficient sleep. Paediatrician Jason Nagata from the University of California at San Francisco emphasised that this late-night period is crucial for adolescent sleep, as it is when the body undergoes essential restorative processes.
Expert Recommendations for Families
To combat this issue, experts recommend that families establish media plans to set boundaries on device usage. This includes powering off devices at a designated time or, ideally, removing screens from bedrooms entirely. By creating a sleep-friendly environment, parents can help safeguard their teenagers' sleep quality and duration, thereby protecting their overall health and academic success.
