Storm Amy to Bring 70mph Winds and Travel Chaos Across UK

Storm Amy, the first named storm of the season, is expected to hit the UK on Friday, bringing winds of up to 70mph and posing a risk of travel disruption, power outages, and dangerous coastal conditions. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for parts of northern and western Scotland, indicating a potential risk to life and property, along with yellow warnings covering Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern and western England, and Wales.

Scientists have warned that Storm Amy could become a 'weather bomb' – a storm that intensifies rapidly, with central pressure dropping by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours. Dr Oscar Martinez-Alvarado of the University of Reading said forecasts suggest Amy could deepen by around 40 millibars in the 24 hours before reaching the UK, surpassing the threshold for a weather bomb by about 15 millibars. This rapid intensification could lead to hurricane-force winds, heavy rain, flooding, and storm surges along the coast.

The amber warning, in effect from 5pm Friday to 9am Saturday, covers parts of northern and western Scotland, with possible travel delays, road and rail closures, and power cuts. A yellow warning for 70mph winds applies to all of Scotland, large parts of northern and western England, and Wales from 3pm Friday to midnight Saturday. The storm is expected to cause difficult driving conditions and potential structural damage from fallen trees.

Storm Amy is developing in the wake of Hurricane Humberto, which has been churning near Hurricane Imelda in the western Atlantic. Dr Martinez-Alvarado explained that the remnants of Humberto are feeding Amy with warmth and moisture as it transforms into a mid-latitude storm on its way to the UK. While the exact track and strength remain uncertain, the storm is forecast to arrive on Friday and batter western and northern areas throughout Saturday.
