Hundreds of schools across the UK have announced closures today (Wednesday) and tomorrow amid an extreme heatwave. A rare red extreme heat warning has been issued for some areas where temperatures could hit a record-breaking 40C. Some schools have also announced early closures, and after-school clubs have been cancelled.
Government Advice on School Closures
The Department for Education (DfE) stated on its website on Monday that 'during hot weather, we don't normally advise schools to close'. The DfE added: 'This is because school attendance is the best way for pupils to learn and reach their potential, and hot weather can usually be managed safely.' However, many schools have opted to close or send pupils home early due to the extreme conditions.
