Ohio Educator Pleads Guilty to Sexual Offences Involving Teenage Student

A former Ohio teacher has been convicted after admitting to a prolonged sexual relationship with her 15-year-old student, a case that involved thousands of inappropriate text messages and declarations of love. Jamelah Daboubi, 28, who taught 10th grade at Horizon Science Academy in Columbus, entered a guilty plea in February to charges including gross sexual imposition and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

Discovery and Investigation

In April 2025, Columbus police responded to a call from the teenage boy's aunt, who had guardianship over him. The aunt reported discovering her nephew in a car with Daboubi at her home on Salado Creek Drive in northeast Columbus. During police interviews, the teenager confessed to the sexual relationship, which included kissing and touching, and stated they had been texting for several months while engaging in sexual activity.

Police seized the student's phone, revealing hundreds of calls and thousands of brazen texts between him and Daboubi. These communications included explicit declarations of their so-called love, according to official statements. The school confirmed Daboubi's dismissal in a statement released on April 21, 2025, following the allegations.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Initially charged with two counts of sexual battery, the charges were later amended by authorities. As part of her plea deal, Daboubi will be required to register as a sex offender. The court has recommended a sentence that includes five years of community control, mandatory counselling, revocation of her teaching licence, and community service. Additionally, she faces an 18-month prison term upon sentencing at a later date.

Broader Context of Educator Misconduct

This case emerges amidst other recent incidents of teacher misconduct across the United States. In Washington state, high school teacher Madeline Gregory, 29, was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student in her classroom closet. Court documents indicate that both Gregory and the student admitted to a months-long relationship, with the student claiming she threatened suicide if he ended it.

Investigators reported that the assaults occurred in various locations, including a gym closet and bushes near the school's tennis court. Although the age of consent in Washington is 16, it is illegal for adults in positions of authority to engage in sexual relationships with teens under their care, highlighting the legal complexities in such cases.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Franklin County Prosecutor's Office, and Daboubi's attorney for further comment, underscoring the ongoing public and legal scrutiny of these disturbing events.
