Educating Yorkshire's Mushy Still Inspires a Decade Later

Musharaf Asghar, known affectionately as 'Mushy' from the first series of Channel 4's Educating Yorkshire, has reflected on his journey from a shy teenager with a stammer to a motivational speaker. The 29-year-old recently returned to his former school, Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury, to deliver a speech to Year 11 students preparing for their GCSEs.

In a viral moment from the original 2013 series, teacher Mr Matthew Burton helped Mushy overcome his speech impediment using a technique from The King's Speech. Now, 13 years later, Mushy shared on TikTok that returning to the school was 'one of the scariest moments of my life', adding that the pressure to 'absolutely smash it' made him nervous.

Mushy has since built a career as a motivational speaker, touring the UK to share his experiences. He also runs a YouTube channel with over 7,000 subscribers and engages with followers on social media, where his openness about his challenges has earned him thousands of supporters.
