Sudan Hospital Drone Strike Kills 64, Wounds 89 in Darfur

A drone strike on a hospital in Sudan's East Darfur region has killed at least 64 people and wounded 89 others, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The attack, which occurred on Friday, targeted the El-Daein teaching hospital, a facility in the RSF-controlled state capital.

The WHO's surveillance system confirmed the incident, noting it involved 'violence with heavy weapons' and affected a secondary healthcare facility, medical personnel, patients, supplies and storage. The UN humanitarian office expressed outrage, stating that children were among the dead.

Sudanese rights group Emergency Lawyers reported that the attack was carried out by an army drone. The army, which controls eastern, central and northern Sudan, has been conducting near-daily drone strikes against RSF positions in Darfur and elsewhere.

Hospitals have been repeatedly targeted throughout the 18-month conflict. The UN has recorded over 1,800 deaths from attacks on health facilities since the war began, including 173 health workers. This year alone, 12 attacks on healthcare have caused 178 deaths and 237 injuries.

The war has killed tens of thousands and displaced over 11 million people, creating what the UN describes as the world's largest displacement and hunger crises, with more than 33 million in need of aid.
