Cat experts have revealed the key warning signs your feline could be feeling lonely—and shared what owners can do to ease separation anxiety for the sake of both their pet's wellbeing and their own.
What Cats Think When You Leave
Nobody wants to bring sadness to their pet, but some animals are more sensitive than others and can feel separation more deeply than their owners realise. For some cat owners, their hearts shatter into a million pieces every time they step out of the front door, hearing the sound of their cat's meows as they close it behind them.
It prompted TikTok channel @cats.psy to explain exactly what's running through your pet's head when you leave them home alone. In a video, they said: "What does your cat actually think the moment you walk out the door and leave? They notice more than most people realise. Next time you head out the door, remember your cat might miss you more than they show."
"Cats quickly learn your routine, the sound of your keys, your coat, and the door closing. Some feel a quiet sadness because they're bonded to you. Others simply go back to sleep or patrol the house." They went on to claim cats can experience mild separation stress, saying: "Some cats think you've gone hunting and will return with food. Others believe you're still standing right behind the door, which is why they wait or meow after you leave."
How to Help Your Cat with Pet Anxiety
Offering some tips, the account suggested leaving a piece of clothing carrying your scent on your cat's favourite spot to help keep them calm while you're away. Adding to this, they said: "A window perch or puzzle feeder can also help." Not only this, but keeping goodbyes calm and brief may help your cat feel more secure.
While it's impossible to know exactly what a cat is thinking at any given time, the experts at PetMD urge owners to watch out for specific warning signs. Marci Koski, CFTBS, CFTBP, owner of Feline Behaviour Solutions in Vancouver, Washington, agreed: "Cats are really attuned to patterns and daily routine. When something is outside of the norm or falls outside of the routine, that's when cats can notice."
"Cats can't tell us they're feeling lonely, so it's up to us to recognize the signs. By understanding the reasons behind these behaviours, we can provide our cats with the support and enrichment they need to thrive."
Signs Your Cat Is Lonely
- Excessive meowing
- Clinginess
- Scratching furniture
- Knocking things over
- Going outside of the litter box
- Chewing on off-limits items
- Excessive grooming
A PetMD statement adds: "Although behaviour does vary some depending on personality and history, most cats are good about getting your attention when they want it. All of these behaviours can signal loneliness and the need for quality time. But both Merlin and Koski note behavioural changes can also indicate health issues. If you notice any of these behaviours persisting, take your cat to the vet to rule out any health problems."
