A woman named Elena Grabovets has shared a simple cleaning hack to remove hard water stains from taps and sinks using just one common cupboard staple: white distilled vinegar. The method involves soaking kitchen roll in vinegar, wrapping it around affected areas, and leaving it for a few minutes before buffing with a microfibre cloth.
The Problem of Hard Water in the UK
Around 60 per cent of the UK is classed as having hard or very hard water, which contains a high concentration of naturally dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. When this water evaporates, it leaves behind deposits that stain taps, sinks, and showers. Many common cleaning products fail to shift these stains entirely.
The Vinegar Hack Demonstration
In her video, Elena began by folding a sheet of kitchen roll several times to create a thicker pad, then soaked it thoroughly in white distilled vinegar. She wrapped the saturated paper around the bathroom tap, covering the areas most affected by hard water stains. She repeated the process on the drain fitting in the sink. After leaving the kitchen roll to work for a few minutes—similar methods recommend five to ten minutes—she peeled it away, revealing the built-up grime and limescale that had transferred onto the paper. Finally, she buffed the surface with a microfibre cloth to leave the tap and drain gleaming.
