Simple Plastic Bag Hack Keeps Sand Out of Beach Shoes
Plastic Bag Hack Keeps Sand Out of Beach Shoes

A woman has shared a simple life hack that helps beachgoers avoid tracking sand into their cars and homes. The trick requires only a plastic bag, an item most people already have at home.

How the Hack Works

Lara, a TikTok user with over one million followers, posted a video demonstrating the method. She fills a plastic bag with seawater, dips each foot in to wash off sand, then puts on her shoes directly. The video caption reads: "This is why you have to bring a plastic bag to the beach."

In the clip, Lara says: "Okay, I'm gonna show you guys a life hack. Grab a plastic bag, put a bunch of water in there." She explains that she doesn't want sand in her shoes, then dips one foot into the bag, washing away the sand before slipping on a sandal. She repeats with the other foot, adding: "I don't have to have sand everywhere." She reminds viewers to recycle the bag.

Viewer Reactions and Alternatives

Fellow TikTok users offered their own tips. One suggested keeping baby powder in the car trunk: "When you get to the car, put powder on your feet, sand comes right off!" Another user asked if it really works, and the original commenter replied: "Yes – my mother did it to us kids all the time before we could get in the car. Wipe off with a towel, put baby powder on, sand falls away!"

Another user shared a similar method: "I would carry the water out to my car and dip my shoe and foot then get in the car." However, they noted that doing it that way can cause sand to get back on feet and shoes.

Environmental Concerns Raised

Not everyone was convinced. Some commenters expressed concerns about plastic pollution. One wrote: "Please don't encourage people to bring any kind of plastic to the beach. Most of it will likely not end up in the garbage." Another said: "I would stay away from recommending plastic bags at the beach. We have enough issues with our oceans [and] sea life as it is. So many people will pollute with those damn bags."

A simpler alternative was suggested: "We just use a bucket."
