Mum Defends Telling Son Off for Blowing Out Birthday Candle at Party
Mum Defends Telling Son Off for Blowing Out Birthday Candle

A mother has been praised online after she disciplined her son for blowing out another child's birthday candle during a party, despite being called "harsh" by another parent.

Incident at the Party

The mum shared her experience on Reddit, explaining that she attended a seventh birthday party with her son. When the birthday cake was brought out, several children repeatedly blew out the candle before the birthday boy could, forcing parents to relight it. Her son also joined in, blowing out the candle before the birthday boy finally had his turn.

After the candle was lit again and the birthday boy blew it out, the mother called her son over and spoke to him sternly but without yelling. She told him that his behavior was not cool and that they should not take moments away from others. The boy accepted the reprimand and went back to playing.

Reaction from Other Parents

The mother noted that no other parents corrected their children for the same behavior. Later, another mother approached her and told her she was "too hard on him," adding that "he is really cute and sweet, and it is a birthday party." The mum replied that she would correct his behavior even at a party because it was rude to the host and he knew better.

In the Reddit comments, many users supported the mum. One user said: "So the mum could not be bothered to correct her kid(s), but definitely thought it would be okay to correct you?" Another commented: "Teacher here. This is why our classrooms are out of control. We message that other mum about her kid and she replies with, 'Well he says he didn't do it and that you're always targeting him.' And no consequences are to be had and the cycle continues."

Online Support

Other users praised the mum for setting boundaries. One wrote: "You sound like the only parent who gently reprimanded their child. That poor birthday kid, having all these kids blowing the candle out on their cake." Another added: "If you don't have boundaries and teach kids how to respect them, they won't know how to set their own or say no to others."

A final comment read: "This kind of thing is why society is in shambles! So many people don’t call out their kids on their bad behaviour and those kids grow up to be entitled adults who think the world revolves around them."

In a follow-up, the mum expressed concern about the other children in her son's class but hoped he would find friends with similar values. She concluded: "Have a nice day! And may you all get to blow out your own candles but you share your birthday cake with many."
