Dyfan Hughes, an 18-year-old from Llangollen, has begun a lengthy flight back to North Wales after suffering a serious crash in China during a charity bike ride. He and his two friends, Louis Dennis, 19, and James Thomas, 19, were cycling from Wrexham to Thailand when Dyfan was severely injured in an accident involving a lorry.
Charity ride in memory of Tony Edge
The three teens had planned the ride in aid of the British Heart Foundation, in memory of Tony Edge, the father of their friend Harrison, who died following a heart attack in 2024. The group, who have been sharing their trip online, accumulated more than 160,000 followers on Instagram and raised £54,000 for the charity.
At the start of August, they told followers that Dyfan had been involved in a serious accident in China. He suffered major injuries to both legs and his left foot, a serious injury to his scalp, and a neck fracture. Since then, he has been treated at Chengdu Hospital and undergone several surgeries, including one that lasted 13 hours.
Recovery and journey home
On September 22, Dyfan shared the results of an MRI scan showing his spine was nearly fully healed. The results meant he did not need another operation before returning to North Wales and was given the all-clear to fly home, subject to sign-off from his insurance company. Wales footballer Harry Wilson shared his support, writing on Instagram: "Great to hear mate. Get yourself home and let that Welsh air heal you up."
On Monday, the 18-year-old embarked on his over 30-hour journey home. He travelled from Chengdu to Hong Kong, Hong Kong to Heathrow, and is then going by ambulance from Heathrow Airport to Wrexham Maelor Hospital, where he will continue his recovery. Dyfan told followers he would be accompanied by the same doctor and nurse throughout the journey. He added: "Honestly it can't come soon enough. I'm counting down the hours now. I can't wait to see my friends and family and get back on home soil to smash my rehab out the park."
Plans to finish the trip
Although the group have had to cut their trip short, they are adamant they will return to finish what they started when it is safe to do so. Donations to their fundraiser for the British Heart Foundation remain open.
