Mrs Hinch fans' 'weird' grass hack cleans oven racks overnight

Mrs Hinch fans have shared a 'weird' cleaning method that removes baked-on food from oven racks overnight, requiring minimal scrubbing and no soaking. The tip has gained attention online after a homeowner asked for advice on the Facebook group 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips'.

The homeowner wrote: "What's the best way to clean oven racks without soaking?" They explained: "I don't have a bath and the sink isn't big enough to soak. I don't have anything big enough to soak them in unless I go and buy a big plastic storage bin tomorrow."

Fans suggest leaving racks on grass

Social media users responded that no bin would be needed. One person replied: "I had a dear old friend who swore by leaving hers out on the grass in the rain and they were always sparkling."

A second commenter suggested a similar approach, writing: "Weird but true, place them on the grass overnight. It works! I’ve tried this when the grass was green and fairly long but it will probably not work at the moment with the grass being so burnt and dry!"

Another agreed: "A long soak in the morning dew…. We used to do this to our BBQ racks." A further reply noted: "Nancy Birtwhistle says this in her books."

Nancy Birtwhistle's method

Nancy Birtwhistle, an author and winner of The Great British Bake Off, previously shared the same method in an Instagram post. She leaves the tray in the garden overnight, then easily wipes away the baked-on food the next morning. Anyone using the tip should wait until the rack is completely cool before handling it and carrying it to the garden.

For those without gardens, Birtwhistle offered an alternative: "If you don't have any grass, we can do it overnight in the sink." In her demonstration, she added three to four large scoops of washing soda to her sink along with hot water.

She added: "Now if you are thinking I haven't got a sink this big, I have followers that have used a wheelbarrow or got a large plastic box, big enough to hold the shelf. Once it's submerged, Leave it to soak overnight."

Reaction to the hack

The video delighted viewers and gained over 20k likes. One person jokingly asked: "What is this grass sorcery?" Another commented: "Stop it!! This is great - I had no ideas these method would work. Will do these overnight." A further fan said: "Oh wow, they're out on the grass tonight! Thanks."
