Fruit flies can be eliminated by simply washing banana stems under running water, according to a TikTok hack that has gone viral. The method targets the eggs laid on stems in grocery stores, stopping infestations before they start.
Why fruit flies are a summer nuisance
Warm weather accelerates fruit ripening and fermentation, attracting fruit flies. A single female can lay up to 500 eggs that mature into breeding adults within a week, leading to rapid infestations. Flies are drawn to the yeast from fermenting fruit, which is why apple cider vinegar traps are common.
The TikTok trick that works
In a video, Rose Reisman demonstrated her method: rinse banana stems under cold water, scrub with a clean sponge or paper towel (no soap), dry thoroughly, and hang to dry. She said, 'Most of the fruit flies gather around the top part of the stem, and when they're in the grocery store, that's where the eggs are being laid. So the minute you get your bananas home, rinse them under some cold water.'
Reisman reported that three days after washing her bananas, she still had zero fruit flies in her kitchen. Commenters thanked her for the tip, noting it eliminates the need for vinegar traps.
How to make a fruit fly trap if needed
If flies are already present, a simple trap can be made: pour 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar into a jar, cover with cling film secured by an elastic band, and poke small holes with a toothpick. Place near fruit bowls or trash cans.
