A Halloween tradition turned to tragedy in Texas when two teenage cousins were shot while attempting a classic 'knock-and-run' prank, leaving one fighting for his life in hospital.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Conroe, north of Houston, when the 14 and 16-year-old boys decided to play a Halloween trick on an unsuspecting resident. What began as youthful mischief ended with both teenagers suffering gunshot wounds in what authorities are calling a devastating case of prank-gone-wrong.
The Fateful Knock
According to Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the teenagers approached a home on Hickory Mist Lane and knocked on the door before running away - a classic Halloween tradition known as 'ding-dong-ditch' in the US.
However, the scenario turned violent when the homeowner, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly responded to the prank by opening fire. Sheriff's Lieutenant Scott Spencer confirmed that the boys were shot while fleeing the property.
Critical Condition
The 14-year-old victim suffered the most severe injuries, with multiple gunshot wounds leaving him in critical condition. His 16-year-old cousin sustained less serious injuries but both required immediate hospital treatment.
"One of the juveniles is in critical condition with several gunshot wounds," Lieutenant Spencer stated. "The other juvenile was also shot but his condition is not considered life-threatening."
Community in Shock
The quiet neighbourhood of Conroe has been left reeling by the violent response to what many consider harmless teenage antics. Residents expressed disbelief that a traditional Halloween prank could escalate to such extreme violence.
Local authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, examining whether the homeowner felt threatened or acted disproportionately to the situation.
As the investigation continues, the incident raises serious questions about appropriate responses to minor property disturbances and the escalating nature of neighbourhood conflicts in modern America.
