Sutton-on-Sea, a traditional seaside village on the Lincolnshire coast, has been named one of the UK's best places to live in 2024 by The Sunday Times, marking its first appearance on the list. The village boasts a Blue Flag award-winning beach with vast stretches of golden sand and safe waters patrolled by lifeguards from June to September, making it an ideal family destination.
Weather and Attractions
The village is expected to see temperatures reach 30°C on Friday before dropping to a milder 26°C over the weekend, offering a respite from the scorching mid-to-high 30s forecast for other parts of England. Beyond the beach, children can enjoy a paddling pool anticipated to reopen during the summer holidays, and beautifully kept gardens provide a tranquil spot for picnics. The Victorian promenade, lined with colourful beach huts, is perfect for strolls or bike rides, and visitors can savour ice cream while taking in the coastal views.
Community and High Street
According to Visit Lincolnshire, Sutton-on-Sea is considerably quieter than its neighbour Mablethorpe and has resisted over-development, retaining its character as an old-fashioned seaside town with a wide, clean beach. Locals were surprised but delighted by the Sunday Times recognition. Caroline, from Waldo's Fish and Chips, told the BBC: "We've still got our high street, with no empty shops, and it's a good community. We have lots of different groups and clubs, and there is always something going on."
Dining and Shopping
The village centre offers a wealth of welcoming cafés, including Ottimo Coffee, Corner House, Cafe and Cream, Ice Rock Café, and Seven Districts Coffee, which boasts stunning coastal views. Despite its modest size, Sutton-on-Sea provides a varied selection of shops, ranging from gifts and confectionery to antiques and traditional bucket-and-spades. One TripAdvisor visitor commented: "Beautiful town, lovely shops, plenty for children and adults to do. The promenade goes on forever with the sea on one side and lined with beautiful beach huts on the other." Another added: "Sutton-on-Sea, lovely place to relax, no amusement arcades, nice outdoor paddling pool for the little ones, just a few nice shops and a small museum of shops."
