An unwanted dog has been passed over by more than 13,000 people searching for a pet, with rescuers fearing there is "nothing special" about him in the eyes of prospective owners. Kito, an eight-year-old rescue dog, has spent months watching fellow dogs depart for their forever homes while he remains alone in his kennel.
Spirit Crumbling in Shelter
Those caring for him now warn that shelter life is gradually crushing his spirit, as he rarely wants to venture out of his kennel any longer. The rescue organisation says Kito is gentle, loyal and affectionate, with a calm nature that demonstrates he is well beyond the challenging puppy phase. They say he finds contentment in life's modest joys, whether that involves going for a walk, settling down for a cuddle, or enjoying a comfortable bed to rest in.
Emotional Plea on Social Media
In an emotional plea shared on social media, the centre said: "Kito is losing hope. Please don't let him grow old in a kennel. Kito is eight years old, and every day that passes, shelter life steals a little more of his spirit. He rarely comes out of his kennel anymore. The boy who once looked forward to getting outside now spends most of his days lying quietly behind the bars. With very little exercise and so little to stimulate him, he's slowly giving up hope."
Overlooked for Being Older
The centre believes Kito is continually overlooked simply because he is no longer a puppy. They added: "This isn't because Kito has done anything wrong. It's because people keep scrolling past him. Maybe it's because he's no longer a puppy. Maybe it's because there are so many dogs waiting. Whatever the reason, Kito continues to watch other dogs leave while he stays behind."
Scar and Past Trauma
Kito also bears a scar on his head, which rescuers suspect may have been sustained prior to his rescue. They said: "We don't know exactly what happened to him before he was rescued, but we believe he may have been struck with an object. Despite whatever he endured, he has never stopped being gentle or trusting."
Ready for UK Home
Kito is presently in Greece and weighs approximately 25kg. He is neutered, in good health, and fully vaccinated. He is prepared to journey to the UK should the suitable family step forward. Concluding their appeal, rescuers encouraged anyone seeking a devoted companion to consider offering the overlooked dog a second opportunity. They said: "If you're looking for a loyal companion who will love you with all his heart, please give Kito the chance he's been waiting for."
