Boy, 14, remembered after fatal farm vehicle crash

The family of a 14-year-old boy who died following a tragic farm vehicle collision have paid a moving tribute to their "cheeky chappie" who was "always smiling".

A tragic incident on a County Durham farm

Aaron Anderson, from Consett, sustained life-threatening injuries when a John Deere Gator overturned at a farm near Burnopfield, County Durham, on Saturday, December 21. He was treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle but sadly passed away on Boxing Day, December 26.

Durham Police were called to the scene at 8.25pm on the night of the incident. Officers performed life-saving first aid on two seriously injured teenagers at the location. In a shocking turn of events, the police vehicle had all four of its tyres vandalised while they were attending the emergency.

A family's heartfelt tribute

In a statement released through Durham Police, Aaron's grieving family painted a picture of a vibrant and hardworking young man. They described him as a "cheeky chappie who was always smiling and would never fail to brighten up your day".

"He was a much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend," the family said. "He will be missed by all who knew him."

They highlighted his passion for rural life, stating: "Aaron was always happiest working on farms and fixing trucks. Even at the age of 14 he had an amazing work ethic and already had two apprenticeship offers."

While mourning the future he will never have, the family expressed profound gratitude for the time they shared. "We are so thankful for the life he has lived and will cherish all the happy memories he left us with," they added.

Ongoing investigation and community support

A 13-year-old boy who was also seriously injured in the same incident is now recovering at home after receiving hospital treatment. The family extended their thoughts to everyone else affected by the tragedy.

They also expressed immense gratitude for the support received, saying: "We have had an overwhelming response from our friends, family, and the local community who we can’t thank enough." They specifically thanked the ambulance service, police, and the staff at the Royal Victoria Infirmary for their efforts and comfort.

Durham Police have confirmed that an investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the collision is continuing. Officers are appealing to anyone who may have any information about the incident to come forward.

The family has requested privacy as they grieve, concluding their tribute with the words: "We would now ask to be left in peace to grieve the loss of our son."
