The A628 Woodhead Pass will remain closed in both directions until at least Monday July 27 following a major moorland wildfire, National Highways has confirmed.
The closure affects the stretch between the A57 at Hollingworth and the A616 at Flouch. The route has been shut since July 16, when a car burst into flames and the fire spread to nearby moorland.
Ongoing emergency response
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has been tackling the wildfire since June 24, 2026. A Major Incident was declared on July 12 due to the scale of the fire and the significant resources required.
A multi-agency response involving Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, National Highways, Derbyshire Police and partner agencies continues. Firefighting operations are supported by crews from across the country and helicopters conducting water drops.
National Highways stated: "The A628 remains closed at the request of Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to allow emergency services to continue firefighting operations safely. The closure is expected to remain in place until at least Monday 27 July 2026, although this is subject to operational progress."
A diversion remains in place.
