A woman is fighting for her life after being stabbed while standing at the altar of Holy Cross Church in Tramore, County Waterford, Ireland, on the morning of July 21, 2026.
Incident Details
Emergency services responded to reports of a suspected stabbing at the church on Summerhill, Tramore, at approximately 9:45 am. The victim, a woman in her 50s, was attacked while at the altar and was subsequently conveyed to Waterford University Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries, according to local reports from WLRFM.
Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s at a domestic residence nearby. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in County Waterford. A knife was seized and will be technically examined.
Political and Community Reaction
Cork TD Ken O'Flynn condemned the attack as a "deeply disturbing" incident. "My thoughts are with her and her family. My thoughts are also with the parishioners and clergy who witnessed this. A place of worship should be a place of safety," he said.
Garda Appeal for Witnesses
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: "Any person who was in the vicinity of Summerhill, Tramore between 9:15am and 10:15am on Tuesday 21st July and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) is asked to make this footage available to Gardaí."
