A 22-year-old woman broke down in tears after telling police she had been gang raped by three men in southwest Kolkata, India. The accused have since been arrested and are being interrogated by police.
Details of the Attack
Thakurpukur police confirmed the attack occurred on Sunday night in the Bachar Para area. The victim managed to escape and reported the ordeal at Netaji Nagar police station. Police then alerted Thakurpukur police to lodge a report.
A senior police officer stated: "On Saturday, the woman had met Tinku at his residence located in Bachar Para area under the Thakurpukur police jurisdiction." The woman said Tinku and his two friends committed the crime. The trio allegedly snatched her phone to prevent her from contacting family or police.
Arrests and Charges
The accused were arrested shortly after a raid on a Bachar Para home. Senior police officials confirmed they have been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, according to Times of India. The woman initially reported her phone stolen but later broke down and disclosed the rape.
Police are investigating the motive for taking the phone and are reconstructing the event. Forensic probes and medical examinations are underway. Interrogations suggest two of the three men returned home on Sunday morning.
