Three men have been arrested after a 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang raped in Karnataka, southern India, after being bundled into a car while walking home.
The attack took place on Saturday night, July 18, at around 9.45pm, when a car pulled up alongside the woman, who works in a fast-food restaurant. The driver reportedly asked for directions before she was pushed inside the vehicle.
Details of the attack
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman was threatened with a beer bottle if she resisted. She was then driven to a remote building where she was gang raped and robbed of around 5,000 Indian Rupees (£39) and two mobile phones.
The woman then claimed to have more money, worth 100,000 Indian Rupees (£774), at her home. The men drove her there at around 2am on Sunday, but she managed to escape by locking herself inside and calling police.
Arrests and charges
Local police confirmed three men were arrested on Monday, July 20, and remain in custody. They have been charged with gang rape, assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, kidnapping, and robbery.
A senior police officer leading the investigation said: "We are continuing the investigation to establish the sequence of events and are also verifying whether the accused have any previous criminal antecedents or are involved in similar offences."
