A woman has appeared in court accused of stabbing a security guard with a needle during a shop robbery in Newcastle. Rachel Cousins allegedly targeted Tesco Express on Chillingham Road, Heaton, on July 26, and stole steaks.
Court hearing
Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard that the 36-year-old was suspected of carrying an uncapped needle, which injured a member of staff. The female security officer suffered a puncture wound to her hand during the incident and needed hospital treatment and blood tests.
Cousins, of Westgate Road, Newcastle, appeared in the dock in custody charged with one count of robbery. Jade Houston, prosecuting, said: "On July 26, it's alleged the defendant went into Tesco on Chillingham Road and stole £60-worth of steaks. She allegedly had an uncapped needle, which was used as a weapon."
No plea entered
Because of the seriousness of the charge, no plea was taken from Cousins during the hearing. Instead, she was remanded in custody to next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on August 25.
