Championship side Wolves cancelled their training session on Monday after striker Tolu Arokodare refused to leave the pitch. Extra security was deployed the following day to prevent the 25-year-old from returning to the club's training ground.
The incident occurred weeks into Cesar Peixoto's reign as manager. Peixoto replaced Rob Edwards, who was sacked after Wolves finished bottom of the Premier League and were relegated.
Arokodare's role in Wolves' relegation
Arokodare scored just six goals in 38 games and was part of the squad responsible for Wolves' dismal season. He had been linked with a move away, but his future at Molineux has been thrown into further uncertainty after Monday's events.
According to The Wolves Poddy, training was cancelled because Arokodare refused to leave the pitch when asked not to train with the rest of the squad. On Tuesday, Wolves increased security at Compton Park to prevent the former Genk striker from entering.
Peixoto's stance and signings
Arokodare will not be involved when Wolves face non-league Maidenhead United in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday night. Serie A clubs Genoa and Fiorentina are interested in signing him, with Fiorentina having had a bid rejected earlier this month.
The decision to block Arokodare from training is seen as a show of power by Peixoto, who is tasked with returning Wolves to the Premier League. In his first interview, he said: "Firstly, I'm a very demanding coach. But, I believe in giving others maximum freedom and maximum responsibility. I want us to work as a team and as a unit and build a good environment. This is important to me, but I know very well what I want from the team. I want my team to be organised with and without the ball."
He added: "Secondly, I want a team with intensity and to be aggressive and win duels. The third one is I want to show the quality of the players. To play an offensive game and to try and press high. To try and be the main character of the games. I want to win games, but I want to win while playing good football. With passion and energy."
Wolves have made three new signings and made defender Ladislav Krejci's loan move permanent for a total fee of £26 million. Right-back Kieran Trippier and striker Raul Jimenez arrived on free transfers under Edwards, and the club paid a reported £7.7 million for left winger Rafiki Said.
