A vicious thug from Wakefield has been locked up for a horrifying broad daylight attack that left an innocent man unconscious and with permanent, life-altering injuries.
Shocking footage of the incident, which unfolded on Cross Street in the city centre, shows Liam Wilson, 31, launching a completely unprovoked assault on his victim. The court heard how Wilson delivered a brutal kick to the man's head as he lay defenceless on the ground.
The attack, described by prosecutors as a display of "gratuitous violence," occurred on the afternoon of October 28, 2022. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was simply going about his day when he was set upon by Wilson.
Life-Changing Injuries and a Lengthy Recovery
The consequences of the assault were severe. The victim was rushed to hospital suffering from a significant brain injury. He spent a considerable amount of time receiving medical treatment and continues to deal with the devastating aftermath, including debilitating headaches and immense anxiety.
In a powerful victim impact statement read aloud to Leeds Crown Court, the man described how the mindless violence shattered his sense of safety and independence. "I no longer feel safe going out on my own," he stated, highlighting the profound psychological trauma inflicted upon him.
Justice Served at Leeds Crown Court
Liam Wilson, of Eastmoor Road, Wakefield, was finally brought to justice. He pleaded guilty to charges of causing grievous bodily harm and possessing cannabis.
Recorder Simon Jackson KC condemned Wilson's actions, stating the violent kick was delivered with "some considerable force." He sentenced Wilson to two years and four months in prison, ensuring the dangerous individual is off the streets of West Yorkshire.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the real-world impact of street violence and the determined efforts of the police and courts to hold perpetrators accountable.
