A 39-year-old man who intervened to protect a friend from muggers has died after being stabbed in broad daylight in Brixton, south London. Lee Casey was attacked in an alleyway on Rush Common on Wednesday and later died in hospital from his wounds.
Witnesses described Mr Casey as a 'Good Samaritan' for his selfless actions. A friend told the Evening Standard: 'Everyone knew Lee because he grew up here and it's a tight community. His mate was being robbed and he stepped in to stop the fight. He was a Good Samaritan.'
Police arrested a 44-year-old man and a 59-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder, but both have been released on bail. Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin said the investigation is ongoing and appealed for witnesses: 'We are following a number of lines of enquiry... I believe that there may be others who saw what happened or may know who was involved.'
Mr Casey becomes the 92nd person killed on London's streets this year, as knife crime continues to rise. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to tackle the 'culture of insolence' among thugs, including extending stop-and-search powers.
