Virgil van Dijk Faces Backlash Over World Cup Comments After Netherlands Exit
Van Dijk Under Fire for World Cup Comments After Exit

Virgil van Dijk sparked a backlash after the Netherlands were eliminated from the World Cup by Morocco in the Round of 32, following a 1-1 draw and a penalty shootout loss. The Liverpool captain's post-match comments, in which he insisted the game plan had worked, drew fierce criticism from fans online.

Van Dijk's Controversial Remarks

Speaking after the match, van Dijk said: "[It's] very difficult to analyse it now. An intense match. I think we were well-organised defensively. They basically couldn't find the open man between the lines. So the game plan worked, of course. I think we scored a good goal. Ultimately, in injury time, you get pushed back. Then it goes to penalties. Unfortunately, we get knocked out."

He added: "If you look at almost all the big teams at the World Cup, they also just drop back and they also wait for the right moment to apply pressure. We trained hard on this for two days. At times it went well. Of course, there are always things that can be improved, but anyway, that doesn't help us right now."

Statistics Highlight Dutch Defensive Approach

The Netherlands surrendered the majority of possession to Morocco, managing an expected goals (xG) of just 0.24 compared to Morocco's 1.4. Morocco also had nearly twice as many attempts on goal, underlining the defensive nature of the Dutch game plan.

Ronald Koeman's side took the lead through Cody Gakpo in the second half, but Issa Diop equalised for Morocco in the 91st minute to force extra time. The Netherlands then missed three penalties in the shootout, sealing their premature exit from the tournament.

Fan Backlash on Social Media

Van Dijk's remarks swiftly drew a fierce response on social media. One user wrote: "Yes Virgil, gameplan succeeded greatly! Much success! Managed to get a draw after parking the bus for 90 minutes, conceding after going 1-0 up and then missing 3 pens. Good process!"

Another questioned: "21 per cent possession in the second half, was that the gameplan?" A third was more blunt, stating: "You can say anything but not that the game plan worked."

Morocco's Next Opponent

Morocco progress to face Canada in Houston on Saturday, with a quarter-final place up for grabs. The Netherlands, meanwhile, face an early return home after a tournament that many expected them to go much further in.
