David Owori, a 27-year-old Ugandan international footballer, has died after being attacked by a gang wielding paving stones outside his home in Kampala. The robbers were attempting to steal his mobile phone when the incident occurred.
Attack and Death
Police reported that Owori resisted the robbery attempt, and witnesses allege he was struck with paving stones. He was rushed to a local medical facility and later transferred to a private facility in the city, but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, August 5.
Club and Federation Tributes
His club, SC Villa, led tributes with a statement calling on authorities to investigate and bring those responsible to justice. The statement read: “Sports Club Villa has called upon the relevant security and law enforcement agencies to urgently investigate and bring to justice those responsible for the tragic death of club captain David Owori, who succumbed to injuries sustained following a brutal assault by unknown assailants.”
The club described his passing as a devastating loss, noting that Uganda has lost not only an accomplished footballer but also an exceptional leader and role model. “This senseless act has robbed the club and the country of a committed captain and a promising sportsman, and it must not go unanswered,” the statement added.
The Ugandan Football Federation also paid tribute, describing him as “a true leader on and off the pitch.”
Career Highlights
Owori had played in Europe, spending time with Spanish side Vélez CF and later moving to Sweden to join Utsiktens BK. He also represented the Ugandan national team.
