David Owori, an international footballer and captain of SC Villa, has died at the age of 27 after being ambushed by thugs and beaten in a street attack. The assault occurred just outside his home in Makindye, a suburb of Kampala, Uganda.
Fatal Attack
Police reported that Owori resisted an attempt to steal his belongings, and witnesses said attackers hit him with paving stones. He was left unconscious and rushed to a medical facility, where he died on Wednesday.
An SC Villa spokesperson said: "The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility."
Tributes Pour In
SC Villa posted a tribute following their captain's passing, saying: "Our hearts are broken. SC Villa mourns the tragic passing of our beloved captain, David Owori, following a brutal attack. We have lost more than a player—we have lost a leader, brother and friend. Our deepest prayers are with his family. Rest well, Captain."
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) also paid tribute, stating: "David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation. As Captain of SC Villa, he led with courage, humility and passion. In the Uganda Cranes jersey, he carried the hopes of a nation."
Career Highlights
Owori, a midfielder, helped SC Villa to their first league title in 20 years in 2024 after rejoining the club in 2023. He previously played for Proline FC, Spanish side Velez CF, and Swedish team Utiskitens BK. He also wore national team colours during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Uganda's parliament held a minute of silence for Owori on Wednesday.
