Uganda is in mourning after David Owori, a 27-year-old footballer who captained SC Villa and represented the national team, was beaten to death outside his home in Kampala. The attack occurred on Tuesday night, and Owori died from his injuries the following day.

Police reported that Owori was assaulted after he resisted robbers attempting to steal his phone and other belongings. Witnesses said a gang ambushed him, repeatedly striking him with paving stones before fleeing. Critically injured, Owori was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

His club, SC Villa, paid tribute, stating, 'We have lost more than a player – we have lost a leader, brother and friend.' Club spokesperson Asan Kasingye confirmed the attack occurred just outside Owori's home in the Makindye area. Police have launched a murder investigation, with spokesperson Rachael Kawala saying the scene has been processed to collect and preserve evidence.
Career and Impact
Known to fans as 'Colgate', Owori was a top defender capable of playing right-back or midfield. In 2023, he returned to SC Villa from Europe, helping the club end a 20-year wait for the Uganda Premier League title, securing a record 17th league crown in 2024. He was awarded a contract extension until 2027 and featured in Uganda's 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
