A police investigation has been launched after an end-of-year prom for pupils at Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy in Birtley was shut down almost two hours early following alleged violence involving students and aggressive behaviour from parents towards venue staff.
Principal Details Incidents in Letter to Parents
In a letter published online on July 11, principal Dr Andrew Fowler said the prom, held on the evening of July 10, was brought to an end on the order of the venue's management after the meal and dance portions had taken place. Dr Fowler described a series of serious incidents, including violence among students, aggressive conduct by some parents toward venue staff, and repeated damage to the venue, particularly in the girls' toilets.
School Staff Efforts and Venue Decision
Throughout the evening, school staff worked closely with venue employees to address concerns and prevent the event from being terminated. Extra vigilance was increased in problem areas, but a minority of students continued to cause damage in unmonitored spots such as toilet cubicles. Dr Fowler emphasized that the decision to close the event was made solely by the venue's management, putting school staff in a difficult position. All safeguarding procedures were followed, parents and carers were immediately notified, and staff remained onsite until all students had safely left.
Police Probe and Financial Liability
Dr Fowler confirmed that a police investigation is now active. The venue's management has indicated the school will be held liable for costs associated with the damage, and any individuals identified as responsible will be held fully accountable. Discussions between the school and the venue are ongoing.
Dr Fowler expressed deep disappointment, stating: "What should have been a celebration of our Year 11 students' achievements and the culmination of their time at school was overshadowed by the unacceptable actions of a small number of individuals." He thanked the majority of students, parents, and carers for their positive conduct and expressed gratitude to staff who gave up personal time to organize and supervise the event.
