Stuart Rainey, a 37-year-old paedophile from North Shields, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison with an additional year on extended licence for raping and sexually assaulting a school-aged girl. The offending came to light after the victim disclosed the abuse to a school staff member, prompting police involvement.
Court hears of threats and trauma
Newcastle Crown Court heard that Rainey warned the child she would be removed from her family if she exposed him. In a victim statement read in court, the girl said she suffers from 'constant nightmares', struggles to sleep, and is traumatised. Judge Julie Clemitson described Rainey as a 'risk to any young girls'.
Conviction and sentence
Rainey, of Borough Road, North Shields, denied charges including rape, sexual activity with a child, sexual assault on a child, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, but was convicted by a jury. He was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life and abide by a sexual harm prevention order for 25 years. The court noted Rainey's previous good character, employment history, and mental health issues.
Police praise victim's bravery
Detective Constable Karen Douglas said: 'Stuart Rainey is a predatory paedophile who has consistently shown an attraction to children. Because of his vile offending, he has robbed this victim-survivor of her innocence and part of her childhood.' She added: 'I want to praise the victim-survivor in this case. Your bravery is the reason this man is now behind bars and will be monitored by police for the rest of his life.'
