Two men stabbed and doused in chilli oil in Ashton

Two men were taken to hospital with stab wounds after a series of incidents in Ashton-under-Lyne town centre on Tuesday evening (August 18). Emergency services responded to reports of assaults involving a non-toxic liquid substance, now believed to be chilli oil, and stabbings.

Police cordons and forensic work

Police cordons were placed on Stamford Street, Warrington Street and Wood Street. Forensic teams were seen carrying out work on Delamere Street, which is understood to be linked to the incident. All police blockades remained in place on Wednesday (August 19).

Victims and arrests

Two men, aged 44 and 50, were taken to hospital with injuries consistent with stab wounds. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, according to police. A 30-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault (grievous bodily harm) and remain in custody for questioning.

Police appeal for information

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers are appealing for information regarding multiple incidents that were reported in Ashton-under-Lyne town centre yesterday evening. These incidents included reports of assaults involving a non-toxic liquid substance, now found to have been chilli oil, and reported stabbings."

"Several locations were examined by detectives and forensic specialists, including scenes on Stamford Street and Warrington Street. One scene remains in place on Wood Street as investigations continue."

"Detectives believe that the incidents are linked and they are not looking for anyone else in relation to these incidents. There will be an increased police presence in the area as enquiries continue and officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed any of the incidents or has relevant CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage."
