Merseyside Police have provided an update after a crash left a teenage girl fighting for her life. At around 1.20am on Sunday, July 17, police received a report that two 17-year-old girls riding an e-scooter had been involved in a collision with a Mercedes Vito van on Great George Street in Liverpool city centre.
Emergency services attended, and one of the girls was taken to hospital in a critical condition. The other teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drug driving, and driving without insurance. The driver of the Mercedes Vito failed to stop at the scene but was located nearby following enquiries. A 57-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and failing to stop.
Update on condition and arrests
A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the ECHO that the girl taken to hospital is now in a serious but stable condition. The other 17-year-old girl and the 57-year-old driver have both been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
Police appeal for witnesses
Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy from the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit appealed for witnesses. He said: “As part of our initial inquiries, we have arrested two people, and they both remain in custody, where they will be questioned about their possible involvement. In the meantime, I'd like to take this opportunity to appeal to any possible witnesses. We know this happened very early this morning, but if anyone saw what occurred or were driving through the area just before the incident, then please get in touch. I would also ask anyone who travelled through other parts of the city and saw two girls on an e-scooter to let us know. Similarly, if you live or work in the area and have CCTV or smart doorbell footage, please take a moment to review to see if you captured anything that could assist our investigation. Even the smallest of details could be vital, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch and let our team review your footage.”
