A TV commentator broke down in tears as he announced the death of Welsh cyclist Finlay Tarling live on air. Tarling, aged 19, died following a serious accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal on Friday.
Incident during stage
Tarling, from Ceredigion, was competing for the NSN Development Team when the incident happened during the 166.8km stage from Melgaço to Fafe. The event was suspended as emergency services responded to the crash.
Commentator's emotional announcement
Commentator Jez Cox, the voice of the finish line for UCI World road cycling championships and Tour of Britain, made the announcement live on air. His voice cracked as he held back tears. He told viewers: "What I have to tell you is not just bad news, it is absolutely horrific news." He read out the official statement and added: "Nothing in my life has prepared me for what to say next. All I can say is that we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends." He said: "It is not the type of announcement I have ever wanted to make about a rider and I am so very, very sorry."
Team and organisers' tributes
In a statement, NSN said: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today. Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed. Our deepest condolences go out to Fin's parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend."
Tarling was a promising young rider who had represented Great Britain on both the road and track. He was the younger brother of Josh Tarling, the Welsh Ineos Grenadiers rider who has established himself as one of the leading young cyclists in the world. The brothers grew up in Ffos-y-ffin, Ceredigion, and both developed their careers through cycling from a young age.
Finlay had joined the NSN Development Team for the 2026 season after previously riding for the Israel-Premier Tech Academy. In a post on X, the race organisers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation expressed their "most heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his team-mates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones". It added that the race had been halted and the scheduled podium ceremony would not take place as a sign of "respect and mourning".
Portuguese broadcaster RTP, which was televising the race, reported that he was involved in a collision with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and not connected to the event.
